Eco Haircare That’s Good For You & The Planet
Have you, like us, been searching for eco haircare alternatives to make your beauty routine more eco-friendly? It surprised us to discover that of all our beauty rituals, haircare tends to be the biggest culprit. According to recent findings, it produces the largest carbon footprint in comparison to other daily rituals, such as skincare and makeup.
Why so bad, you ask. Well, for starters, the washing process uses significant amounts of both water and energy. That’s before you factor in the energy used by blow-drying or styling appliances such as straighteners and curling tongs. In addition, your haircare products themselves may also be harming the planet. Would you be surprised to learn that your daily shampoo or conditioner could be hiding plastic, petroleum or crude oil derivative-based ingredients?
What’s worse, these also end up being washed into our waterways and can be potentially harmful to marine life. While some hair products also contain palm oil which is known to cause widespread deforestation and the endangerment and extinction of many animal species. This is all before we touch on the issue of plastic packaging waste. Statistics from the Recycle Now campaign highlight that while 90% of kitchen waste is recycled, only 50% of bathroom waste is.
Pause. Breathe. It’s not all doom and gloom, though. There are some steps you can take to limit the impact of your hair routine including changing your products and luckily there’s an array of green haircare brands.
